While exploring the darkest impulses of man, this collection is both “… sinister and gripping.” ~ Raju Chacko, Reedsy reviewer.
Elliot is a burned-out firefighter with PTSD on the verge of suicide in a modern reimagining of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol. Can a succession of ghostly visitors one Christmas Eve help Elliot face his demons before it’s too late?
Following the feature story are five additional tales of supernatural and psychological suspense. A solitary night janitor battles a sinister man in black (Janitor). A firefighter fails to heed an otherworldly warning (Death Alarm). A happily married man spirals into obsession over a comment by an internet troll (CatchTime). A man runs for his life down a dark country lane pursued by a stranger with murder in mind (Skelwaller Lane). A paramedic’s haunting secret threatens to destroy her life (DOA).
Written from the soul of a firefighter who has seen his own struggles, A Firefighter Christmas Carol and Other Stories is “… a brilliant read.” ~ Billie, Goodreads Reviewer.
“Not for the faint of heart. This author has a fantastic way of leading you on a path that seems sound and then pulling the rug from under your feet. Douglas R. Brown has a wonderful writing style. Definitely a recommended read.” ~ Marion, Goodreads Reviewer.
From the Publisher
Following a lifelong love of the fantasy genre, Douglas R. Brown writes to escape the horrors of watching people die as a firefighter/paramedic on a large urban fire department. From the epic fantasy trilogy The Light of Epertase to dystopian fantasy in Death of the Grinderfish, there’s something for every fantasy fan.
With hopes of bringing something new and unique to the werewolf genre, Douglas searched for an idea. While petting his gentle yet ferocious-looking Doberman Pinscher, Eko, he found inspiration. He asked himself, “Would humans own werewolves as pets if they thought they were safe? And what happens if they’re not?” Yes, he actually said that out loud. He found it fascinating that such a scary creature could be so docile and part of his family. And there it was. An idea was formed.
After struggling with PTSD from a tough emergency call as a paramedic, Douglas began writing as a cathartic way of dealing with his demons. While he dove into his lifelong love of fantasy and horror, he hoped to one-day write something creative and original enough about his struggle to do the topic justice. Using Charles Dickens’s wonderful A Christmas Carol as a template, Douglas strove to do just that with A Firefighter Christmas Carol and Other Stories. After adding five additional short stories that carried similar paranormal or psychological themes, Douglas believes he has accomplished what he had always hoped to do.
